Green Schools

Green-schools is Ireland’s leading environmental management and education programme for schools, that is student-led giving the children an opportunity to work and collaborate with the whole school community to achieve green flags for their school. There are a total of eight green-school flags that can be achieved covering eight different environmental themes.

A minimum of two years is spent working on each theme and once the school is deemed to meet the criteria a green-schools flag is awarded. Our school community has worked tirelessly over the past few years and have successfully acquired five green flags to date. The flags previously awarded covered the themes of Litter and waste, Energy, Water, Travel, and Biodiversity. Our current theme for our sixth flag is Global citizenship litter and waste.

The children in our school play a vital role in the Green-schools programme. The children are elected by their peers and work closely with staff members to form the Green-schools committee. The committee meets regularly to discuss different environmental issues and ways in which we can combat these issues in our school and school community. Our main aim currently is to reduce the amount of waste we are creating in our school, to educate the school community on litter and waste and to complete an audit to examine the process of fairtrade to see where products we are consuming originate from. The children have the opportunity to foster and acquire new skills throughout their time on the green-schools committee such as that of organisation, researching and compiling, along with working as a team, which are valuable skills which the children can take with them throughout their education and lifelong journey.
